How to Dispose of Broken Glass in Ireland Safely

Start by identifying the glass. GlassBag can collect carefully handled broken glass bottles and jars in covered areas. Drinking glasses, mirrors, window panes, ceramics and heatproof glass are not accepted. Keep these items separate and check your waste collector or local recycling centre's disposal instructions.

Broken bottles and jars

A broken food jar or drinks bottle is still container glass. GlassBag accepts this glass when it is contained safely in the collection bag. We collect household bottles and jars with all colours mixed together.

Handle broken pieces carefully. Do not leave sharp edges protruding from a bag or container. If you are unsure how to prepare a broken bottle or jar for collection, contact us before putting it out.

Drinking glasses, mirrors and ovenware

These do not belong in GlassBag's bottle-and-jar collection:

• Drinking glasses and tumblers
• Mirrors, window panes and glass tabletops
• Pyrex and other heatproof ovenware
• Ceramics, crockery and light bulbs

Check the disposal route for the specific item. Your waste collector or recycling centre can confirm whether it accepts the item and how it needs to be packaged. Check before travelling, especially with a large mirror or window pane.

Before moving broken glass

• Keep children and pets away from the area.
• Wear protective gloves and closed shoes. Use a dustpan and brush rather than picking up fragments with bare hands.
• Keep sharp pieces contained so they cannot cut someone handling the waste.
• Do not smash a large glass item to make it fit in a bin. Ask the receiving facility about safe handling and acceptance.
